Smartphones are killing PC's

Postby brutegirl » Sat Jun 18, 2011 3:47 pm

n the first three months of this year, just under half of all the 45 million cellphones sold in Western Europe were smartphones – able to browse the web, send and receive e-mail, and run custom-written apps, including storing contacts and calendars, sending SMSes and making phone calls.

Worldwide, smartphones represent 24% of all cellphones worldwide between January and March – up from 15% a year before. The tipping point when they make up 50% may only be a year or so away. And before the end of the decade, every phone sold will be what we'd now call a smartphone.

This indicates a huge shift that's coming to computing, and was behind Microsoft's $8-billion splurge in May when it bought the Skype internet telephone service, and behind the rumours that Microsoft is going to buy Nokia, the Finnish company that makes most cellphone handsets and smartphones.

In the first three months of 2010, 85-million PCs were sold worldwide, compared with 55-million smartphones. Optimistic analysts forecast that the crossover might happen in 2012. Instead, by the last three months of 2010, 94 million PCs were sold – and 100 million smartphones. Analysts believe that this trend will never reverse.

"Smartphones will keep growing in sales approaching the billion-plus levels of total handset sales before this decade is done," says Tomi Ahonen, a former Nokia executive who now has his own mobile industry consultancy. "The trend of PC sales is stagnant or at best modest growth, selling around 300 million per year."

Wonder if smart phones and tabs will kill off land lines and the regular cellphones

every where we look, one sees people with smart phones, faxes are a thing of the past, and the next one is sms

self have gone from 1400 sms per month to less then 20

its emails, and text messages via whatsapp yahoo messenger and others

black berry is very popular in SA and other pockets around the world, however believe that fad will also fade

smart phones using adroit seems to be the market perdition choice, with apple trailing behind
Nokia nd windows 7, is looking a making a cutback, however I think they have missed the train

blackberry is looking at moving to a operating system that will be able to use android application, from where I sit, it looks like just android with another name, like with linux, various developers have developed different lines, like Umbunto, Mandriva, Red Hat. . . . . .

With android being linux based. BB's operating system will be android with a different name

will be good to read this thread in two years time

last thing, 20 months ago, when we go our BBs we wondered what would we get to replace the BBs with, well that has been answered, with tablets

Wow
How things have changed, or should we say progressed

We hardly use of laptops
Actually, self only use laptops to edit video footage
To crop photos , can be done on most smart phones
Won't bore you with all the details of the how far smart phone have gotten

Well maybe a little
The new thing , for over a year at least in my life, has been the plug in devices that one can use to plug into into a smart phone
Endoscope cameras, although have found it difficult to use, sometimes it will record and sometimes it won't
The latest one, is the plugging in of the cellphone into the DJI mavic controller, to help fly the drone, by accessing certain Flying functions, and accessing the drone's 4k camera settings

We can and do monitor our security cameras remotely, via smart phones and tablets

Interesting times we live in
Thand for reading
